Let’s Rewind

As we reflect on the equity market journey this year, let’s rewind to the start when optimism was high. Then, enter Trump’s tariff announcements. Cue the tumble.

Using the S&P 500 as a marker:

  • 1 January: Started at 5,882 points
  • 8 April, height of panic: Dropped to 4,982 points (-15.3%)
  • Current value: 5,916 points (+19.5% from the height of panic)

And to put things in perspective, on this day five years ago in May 2020, it was at 2,863 points.

The Same Story, Every Time

As I have said many times, intra-year declines are a constant. There is always something going on. Admittedly, sometimes the dynamics are a bit more serious than others. But history has shown us that things always rebound, and the great companies of the world push forward.

The advance in global equity markets has been permanent, showing resilience in the face of uncertainty.
